Motorcycle Shipping Requires Specialized Care

Motorcycle shipping is fundamentally different from car shipping. Bikes are smaller, lighter, and far more vulnerable to damage if not properly secured. A single tipover can cause thousands of dollars in fairing, paint, and exhaust damage. That's why Heartland Auto Transport treats motorcycle shipping as a specialty service — not just an afterthought to car transport.

When you ship a motorcycle with us, we match you with carriers experienced in motorcycle transport. That means proper wheel chocks designed for motorcycles, soft straps that don't damage handlebars or controls, and either an enclosed trailer (preferred) or a covered section of an open carrier. We ship Harley-Davidson cruisers and baggers, Honda Gold Wings and adventure bikes, BMW R-series and GS models, Ducati and MV Agusta exotics, Indian touring bikes, sport bikes (R1, GSX-R, ZX-10R, CBR, Ninja, Panigale), dirt bikes and motocross bikes, vintage and classic motorcycles, and trikes and trike conversions.

Enclosed vs. Open Motorcycle Transport

We strongly recommend enclosed motorcycle transport for most shipments. Enclosed trailers protect your bike from road debris, weather, and theft. The cost difference is usually $100-$300 compared to open transport, which is a small premium given the value most motorcycles carry. We use carriers with dedicated motorcycle sections in their enclosed trailers — your bike is secured upright with wheel chocks and tied down with soft straps, never crammed into a standard car-shipping configuration.

For budget-conscious shipping of less valuable motorcycles, open transport is available. Your bike will be secured upright with proper wheel chocks on the lower deck of a multi-car carrier. While it's exposed to weather, the risk of damage is low with experienced carriers.

Motorcycle Shipping Cost from Alabama

Motorcycle shipping costs less than car shipping because bikes are smaller and lighter, but the per-mile rate is similar. Realistic prices from Alabama: Birmingham to Atlanta (enclosed) $350-$500, Mobile to Sturgis SD (enclosed) $1,400-$1,800, Huntsville to Daytona FL (enclosed) $500-$700, Montgomery to Las Vegas (enclosed) $1,200-$1,500, Tuscaloosa to Laconia NH (enclosed) $1,400-$1,700. We ship to and from all major motorcycle events and destinations, including Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week, Laconia, Americade, the Smoky Mountains, and dealer-to-dealer transfers.

How to Prepare Your Motorcycle for Shipping

  • Drain the gas tank to a quarter or less. Less fuel reduces weight and fire risk.
  • Disable the alarm or anti-theft system.
  • Document the bike's condition with detailed photos from all angles, including any existing scratches, dings, or paint chips.
  • Remove or secure any loose accessories — saddlebags, windshields, GPS units, helmets, gear bags. Loose items can shift and cause damage.
  • Fold mirrors in if possible.
  • Check that tire pressure is correct so the bike rolls smoothly during loading.
  • Provide a second key if you have one.
  • For non-running motorcycles, tell us upfront so we send a carrier with a ramp.

Common Motorcycle Shipping Scenarios

Heartland handles motorcycle shipping for: bikers traveling to major rallies (Sturgis, Daytona, Laconia, Americade) who don't want to ride one-way; motorcycle buyers and sellers using eBay Motors, Cycle Trader, or Facebook Marketplace; dealers transferring inventory between locations; military members on PCS orders; collectors moving vintage and classic bikes between regions; snowbirds shipping motorcycles south for winter riding; estate transfers when inheriting a motorcycle from out of state; and competitive racers and motocross riders shipping bikes to tracks and events.
