Boat Transport — A Different Kind of Auto Transport

Boat shipping isn't really auto transport at all — it's marine transport, which has its own regulations, carrier networks, and operational considerations. Boats can't be loaded on standard car carriers. They require boat-specific trailers, flatbeds, or in some cases ocean shipping containers. Oversized boats (beam over 8'6", height over 13'6", or length over 40') require state oversize permits, escort vehicles, and specific route planning. Beam-specific routing matters because some bridges, tunnels, and overpasses simply can't accommodate wide-beam boats.

Heartland Auto Transport partners with specialty boat transporters to handle Alabama boat shipping. We coordinate the carrier matching, permit applications, route planning, and timing — you tell us the boat specs, pickup location (marina, slip, boat yard, dry storage, private property), and destination, and we handle everything else. We move center console fishing boats (Boston Whaler, Grady-White, Yellowfin, Contender, SeaVee, Robalo, Sea Pro, Sea Hunt), pontoon and tritoon boats (Bennington, Harris, Sun Tracker, Premier, Crest), sport boats and runabouts (Cobalt, MasterCraft, Malibu, Nautique, Sea Ray, Chaparral, Regal), wake boats and tournament boats, ski and surf boats (Mastercraft NXT, Malibu Wakesetter, Nautique G, Centurion Ri, Axis), sailboats (small day sailers to 50+ foot cruising sailboats), trawler-style cruising boats, bass boats (Ranger, Triton, Skeeter, Nitro, BassCat), jon boats and aluminum fishing boats, jet skis and personal watercraft (Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner, Kawasaki Jet Ski), and yachts (over 40 feet, requiring oversized permits and specialized transport).

Boat Transport Methods

There are three primary boat transport methods, and the right choice depends on your boat. Trailerable boat transport: if your boat sits on a trailer (most boats under 30 feet do), the simplest option is towing the boat on its own trailer. Our drivers connect your trailer to the truck and tow it to the destination. This is the cheapest method and works for any boat that has a legal road trailer.

Flatbed transport: for boats without trailers, oversized boats that exceed legal trailer specs, or boats being shipped to destinations where trailer transport isn't practical, we load the boat onto a specialized flatbed trailer with cradles or supports. This is common for sailboats (especially those with deep keels), oversized power boats, and unique hull shapes that need custom support.

Crane-loaded transport: for boats over 40 feet or those at marinas, we coordinate crane loading onto the transport trailer. The boat is lifted from the water or storage by a marine crane and placed on a specialty trailer for road transport. This requires coordination with marina equipment and is the most expensive method, but it's the only way to move many oversized vessels.

Boat Transport Cost from Alabama

Boat transport pricing depends heavily on boat size, weight, beam (width), trailer ownership, and route. Realistic prices from Alabama: Mobile to Lake Lanier GA (24ft center console on trailer) $700-$1,000, Birmingham to Tampa (22ft pontoon on trailer) $800-$1,100, Huntsville to Lake Cumberland KY (28ft Cobalt on trailer) $700-$1,000, Mobile to Florida Keys (32ft sport fisher, flatbed) $1,500-$2,000, Montgomery to Lake Tahoe (40ft sailboat with deep keel, flatbed) $5,000-$7,000, Tuscaloosa to San Diego (sailboat 35ft, flatbed) $4,500-$6,500, Mobile to Annapolis MD (yacht 45ft, oversized flatbed with escort) $8,000-$12,000.

Factors affecting price: beam over 8'6" requires oversize permits, height over 13'6" requires route survey for bridge clearance, length over 40' may require escort vehicles, weekend or holiday loading at marinas may incur surcharges, and seasonal demand (snowbird boats heading south in fall) tightens capacity.

Preparing Your Boat for Transport

Boat transport preparation is detailed and important.
  • Remove all loose items: Life jackets, fishing gear, electronics, anchors, lines, cushions, coolers. Loose items shift and damage interior surfaces.
  • Drain water tanks: Fresh water tanks, livewells, and bilge water should be drained.
  • Secure or remove canvas: Bimini tops, full enclosures, and covers should be fully removed or securely tied down. Wind damage during transit is a common problem.
  • Lock all hatches and storage: Cabin doors, deck hatches, fish boxes, in-floor storage — all locked closed.
  • Disconnect batteries: Battery switches off, or disconnect terminals. Prevents electrical short during loading and transit.
  • Remove or lower antennas, radar arches, and radio masts: Anything taller than the boat's normal travel height should be lowered.
  • Fold or remove radar arches and outriggers: These add to total transport height and width. Removable items should be removed and packaged separately.
  • Tilt outboard motors up: Outboards should be tilted fully up and locked in travel position.
  • Provide boat trailer registration and tags: If transporting on your trailer, the trailer must be road-legal with current tags.
  • Document the boat's condition with photos: Hull, deck, interior, equipment. Take pre-shipment photos from all angles.
  • Check tire pressure on trailer: Trailer tires often sit unused for months. Verify proper inflation before transit.
