ATV and UTV Transport — Tailored for Off-Road Vehicles

ATVs and UTVs (side-by-sides) need specific transport considerations that car shipping doesn't address. They have low ground clearance limited by aggressive off-road tires, soft tops or no tops at all (susceptible to weather damage), exposed mechanical components, accessory-loaded builds with light bars, winches, sound systems, and roof racks, and aftermarket modifications that affect dimensions. Plus, they're light — typically 700-2,000 pounds — meaning multiple ATVs can share a transport trailer efficiently.

At Heartland Auto Transport, ATV and UTV shipping is one of our most common powersports services. We move Polaris RZR (XP 1000, XP Turbo, Pro R, Pro XP, Trail Boss), Polaris General, Sportsman, and Scrambler models, Polaris Ranger (full-size and crew), Can-Am Maverick X3 (Max, RR, Turbo, X-RC), Can-Am Defender (HD9, HD10, MAX), Can-Am Outlander and Renegade ATVs, Honda Talon, Pioneer (500, 700, 1000), Big Red, Honda FourTrax, Rancher, Foreman, Rubicon ATVs, Yamaha YXZ1000R, Wolverine X2/X4, Viking, Rhino, Yamaha Grizzly, Kodiak, Raptor ATVs, Kawasaki Mule (Pro-FX, Pro-FXT, SX), Teryx, Brute Force, Arctic Cat Wildcat XX, Prowler, Alterra, Textron Off Road models, classic ATVs (vintage Honda 250R, Suzuki LT250, Yamaha Banshee), motocross and trail bikes (technically motorcycles but often grouped with ATVs in transport).

Open vs. Enclosed ATV/UTV Transport

ATV and UTV transport can go open or enclosed, and the right choice depends on the vehicle and its condition. Open transport works well for used or rough-condition ATVs and UTVs where weather and road grime are not concerns — typically the most affordable option. The ATV is loaded on a multi-vehicle open trailer alongside other vehicles, secured with straps over the tires or frame.

Enclosed transport is recommended for new ATVs and UTVs (just purchased from a dealer), aftermarket builds with expensive accessories worth protecting (light bars, audio systems, custom paint), competition vehicles being shipped to events, and any ATV or UTV being shipped through weather extremes (winter snow, heavy summer storms). Enclosed transport costs more but protects the vehicle completely.

Most of our ATV and UTV transport customers choose enclosed for newer or expensive builds, and open for older work or trail vehicles.

ATV and UTV Transport Cost from Alabama

ATV and UTV transport is more affordable per-vehicle than car shipping because multiple units share carrier capacity. Realistic prices from Alabama: Birmingham to Atlanta (single Polaris RZR XP, open) $350-$500, Mobile to Dallas (Can-Am Maverick X3, enclosed) $700-$900, Huntsville to Las Vegas (Polaris RZR Pro R, enclosed) $1,300-$1,600, Montgomery to Sturgis SD (multiple ATVs, enclosed) $1,200-$1,500 per unit, Tuscaloosa to Denver (Honda Talon, enclosed) $1,100-$1,400. Multiple-vehicle discounts apply when shipping 2+ ATVs or UTVs together. Mud-bog or off-road event transport may incur premium pricing during peak event seasons.

Preparing Your ATV or UTV for Transport

  • Drain fuel to a quarter tank or less: Reduces weight and fire risk during transit.
  • Remove or secure loose accessories: Detachable doors, soft tops, antennas, light bars on quick-release mounts.
  • Disconnect the battery or use the battery cutoff switch if equipped.
  • Document the condition with photos: Frame, body panels, tires, accessories. Take pre-shipment photos from all angles.
  • Provide a key fob or ignition key — drivers need to be able to move the ATV/UTV on and off the trailer.
  • Inflate tires to proper pressure: ATV tires running off-road pressure are too soft for loading. Pump up to street-pressure spec before pickup.
  • Tie down any removable cargo: If you're shipping cargo boxes, gun cases, or coolers along with the ATV (often allowed up to weight limits), secure them properly.
  • Note any modifications: Lifts, oversized tires, custom wheels, suspension changes — these affect tie-down points and clearance.
