Why EV Shipping Needs Specialized Knowledge
Electric vehicle shipping is the fastest-growing segment of auto transport, and it requires understanding that goes beyond loading a car onto a trailer. EVs are heavier than equivalent gasoline vehicles — sometimes by 1,000 pounds or more — because of their massive battery packs. A Tesla Model Y weighs about 4,400 lbs versus 3,800 for a comparable BMW X3. A Rivian R1S weighs nearly 7,000 lbs. This added weight affects how the carrier is loaded, which deck position the vehicle occupies, and total carrier weight limits.
Beyond weight, EVs have unique pre-transport considerations: state of charge, regenerative braking systems that engage when wheels turn, and 12V battery management. Heartland Auto Transport's carriers understand these nuances. We ship Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck, Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV, Lucid Air sedan, Ford F-150 Lightning, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Bolt, Bolt EUV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Kia EV6 and EV9, Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq, Polestar 2 and 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Audi e-tron and Q4 e-tron, Mercedes EQS and EQE, BMW i4, i5, i7, and iX, Porsche Taycan, and Nissan Ariya.
How to Prepare Your EV for Transport
Preparing an EV for shipping is slightly different from preparing a gasoline vehicle.- Charge to about 50%: Don't ship with a fully charged battery (some recommend less for safety) or a near-empty battery (which could die during transit). 40-60% state of charge is ideal.
- Disable sentry mode and dashcam features: These drain the 12V battery during transport. Tesla owners specifically should turn off Sentry Mode in the app.
- Provide the access card or key fob: The driver needs to be able to put the vehicle in transport/tow mode for loading.
- Note any transport-specific modes: Tesla has a Transport Mode. Rivian has a similar feature. Tell us if you've activated these.
- Document the vehicle's condition: Photos from every angle, including the underbody if possible — EVs have exposed battery packs that are critical to inspect.
- Disable any aftermarket alarms: Same as any other vehicle.
EV Shipping Cost — More Than Standard Vehicles
EV shipping typically costs 10-15% more than equivalent gasoline vehicle shipping for a few reasons: EVs are heavier, EVs take up the same deck space but reduce total carrier weight capacity, and some carriers charge a small EV surcharge to account for additional handling complexity. Realistic EV shipping costs from Alabama: Birmingham to Atlanta (Tesla Model 3) $500-$700, Mobile to Miami (Rivian R1S) $900-$1,200, Huntsville to Los Angeles (Tesla Model Y) $1,400-$1,800, Montgomery to Boston (Ford Lightning) $1,500-$1,900. Open vs. Enclosed Transport for EVs
Most daily-driver EVs ship safely on open carriers, just like gasoline vehicles. Tesla Model 3s, Mustang Mach-Es, Chevy Bolts, and similar mainstream EVs are fine on open transport. For high-end EVs like the Lucid Air Sapphire, Tesla Model S Plaid, Rivian R1S Launch Edition, Mercedes EQS, Porsche Taycan Turbo S, or any Cybertruck, we recommend our enclosed transport service to protect the vehicle's finish and high-tech sensors from road debris.
EV-Specific Concerns We Handle
Customers frequently ask about specific EV transport concerns. Battery discharge during transport: minimal — modern EVs lose only 1-3% per week when properly prepared. Regenerative braking during loading: not an issue when the vehicle is in transport/tow mode. Damage to charging ports: very rare, but our carriers know to avoid contact with the charging port area during securement. Insurance for high-value EVs: every shipment is covered by the carrier's cargo insurance, which adequately covers most EVs. For ultra-high-value EVs (Lucid Air Sapphire, Tesla Model S Plaid, six-figure trims), we can arrange additional supplemental coverage on request.
