Do Online Car Sellers Handle Their Own Shipping?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no — and the difference matters. Carvana and Vroom typically handle their own delivery (or contract with specific carriers) and roll the shipping cost into the vehicle price. You don't choose your shipper. The car arrives when their system says it arrives, often with limited flexibility.
eBay Motors, dealer auctions, classic car auctions, private sellers, and dealer websites typically leave shipping up to the buyer. You can drive to pick up the vehicle yourself, or you can hire an auto transport company. For anything more than a few hundred miles, shipping is almost always more practical than driving.
This is where Heartland Auto Transport comes in. We coordinate with online sellers across the country to pick up vehicles you've purchased and deliver them directly to your Alabama address.
How Online Car Shipping Coordination Works
When you ship a car you bought online, the process typically goes like this:
1. You provide pickup details. Tell us the seller's address (dealership, Carvana hub, eBay seller's home, auction yard, etc.), the vehicle details (year, make, model, VIN), and your delivery address in Alabama.
2. We contact the seller to coordinate pickup. Our dispatcher calls the seller (or you can introduce us directly), confirms vehicle availability, and arranges a pickup window. The seller doesn't need to do anything except be available to release the vehicle when our driver arrives.
3. The carrier picks up. Our driver shows up at the seller's address, inspects the vehicle alongside the seller, completes the Bill of Lading documenting condition at pickup, and loads the car. You don't need to be present.
4. In-transit updates. Your dispatcher keeps you informed of progress. Cross-country transport from a Carvana hub on the West Coast to Alabama takes 7-10 days. Regional moves (Texas or Florida sellers to Alabama) take 2-5 days.
5. Delivery to you. The carrier delivers to your Alabama address. You inspect the vehicle, compare condition against the pickup documentation, sign the delivery Bill of Lading, and the car is yours.
Common Online Car Shipping Scenarios
Carvana to Alabama: Carvana has hubs across the country. If you bought a Carvana vehicle that's at a hub far from Alabama, you have options: accept Carvana's delivery timeline (often weeks), or pick the car up at the nearest hub yourself and have us ship it (faster). Some buyers prefer their own shipping for control and timing.
Vroom to Alabama: Vroom typically handles delivery but offers limited flexibility on timing or pickup location. Customers occasionally arrange their own shipping for faster delivery.
eBay Motors to Alabama: Almost always buyer-arranged shipping. The seller can be a dealer, dealership, or private party anywhere in the country. We coordinate with the seller for pickup.
Dealer auctions (Manheim, Copart, IAA): Common for licensed dealers and savvy retail buyers. Auctions have pickup time limits — typically 5-7 days — so timing matters. We coordinate with auction yards.
Private sellers on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, BringATrailer: Anywhere the seller is willing to release the vehicle to our driver, we can pick up. We coordinate with the seller and verify ownership transfer happens correctly.
Classic car auctions (Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, Bonhams): Often require specific timing and may require enclosed transport. We handle auction logistics including pickup deadlines and event-specific timing.
What to Verify Before Shipping
Before booking shipping for an online purchase, verify these critical details:
• You've actually paid for the vehicle. Sounds obvious, but never have a vehicle shipped before payment is finalized. Wire transfers, certified checks, or completed online payment platforms are the standard.
• Title and ownership transfer is clear. The seller should provide a clean title or have a clear process for transferring the title to you. Don't accept 'I'll mail the title later' as the only proof of ownership transfer.
• Vehicle condition matches the listing. If possible, have someone inspect the vehicle in person or via video before shipping. Once the car is on the truck, returning it is complicated and expensive.
• VIN matches the listing. Verify the seller is shipping the actual vehicle you bought. VIN scams happen.
• Pickup address and contact info is accurate. Our driver needs a real address and a real phone number to reach the seller. Verify both.
What to Inspect at Delivery
When the carrier delivers your online-purchased vehicle to Alabama, inspect it carefully before signing the Bill of Lading. Compare against the pickup BoL (the carrier will have a copy). Look for:
• Exterior damage — scratches, dings, dents, paint chips that weren't on the pickup BoL
• Glass damage — windshield chips or cracks
• Interior condition — seats, dash, headliner, mileage
• Mechanical operation — start the engine, test the brakes, listen for unusual sounds
• Items inside the vehicle — verify everything that was supposed to come with the car is still there (manuals, both key sets, accessories)
If you find damage or discrepancies, note them on the delivery BoL BEFORE signing. Take photos. Don't sign a 'clean' BoL if there's any issue.
And remember: any damage that occurred during transit is the carrier's responsibility (covered by cargo insurance). Any condition issue that existed before pickup is the seller's responsibility, not the carrier's.
